What is an audit and what to expect from an organisational survey?

Advantages and disadvantages of organisational surveys

Why organisational surveys fail?

Does the company need an organisational survey?

Because surveys require the allocation of valuable resources, their timing and frequency are critical. The following guidelines should be considered before a company embarks on an organisational survey:

  • What are the outcomes we envisage?
  • Will the survey monitor progress?
  • What resources do we have available to conduct the survey?
  • Is the leadership of the company ready to commit time, attention, and resources to resolving problems that may be revealed in the survey results?

When is an organisational survey needed?

Timing of any organisational survey is a crucial aspect of the whole process. To obtain management information timeously, it is important to take management processes like budgeting, strategic planning, human resources planning and manpower planning into consideration. Sensible advance planning will ensure that the results of an organisational survey are optimally utilised. More specifically an organisational survey is needed when:

  • a potential problem area needs further investigation
  • conditions change
  • management is not receiving the correct information
  • management needs a realistic baseline or benchmark
  • management needs information for strategic planning
  • the organisation is in the process of change
